A large, protective, independent-thinking dog is the best home protection. They don't have terrific eyesight, but they smell amazingly well, and can hear well enough to recognize their master's car tires 1/2 mile away.
A good livestock guardian dog spends most of its time lying in the shade...watching. An intruder doesn't notice her there until she's suddenly in his face. She weighs about 150 pounds and stands 29.5 inches at the shoulder. She is instinctively protective of those she considers her family, and she considers obedience optional.
Put 2 or 3 of these in your yard, and it doesn't make your place impossible to assail....just more difficult than the next guy's.
