A fire in a bathroom ceiling fan sent smoke billowing through an Elgin FAA facility Tuesday, shutting down takeoffs and landings for several hours at O’Hare International and Midway airports, canceling hundreds of flights and disrupting air traffic across the region, officials said.

The Elgin TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control) facility was evacuated at about 11:30 a.m., according to a statement from the FAA. Elgin police said there was smoke coming from a faulty motor in an HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) unit at the facility.

More than 600 flights at O'Hare and 75 at Midway with both airports still reporting significant delays as of 3 p.m.
