Man dressed in camouflage says he was being persecuted by Feds, Independence Visitor Center at Independence Mall due to an emergency situation.

Authorities have closed the Independence Visitor Center at Independence Mall due to an emergency situation.

The center, located at 6th and Market streets in Philadelphia, was evacuated just after 12:00 p.m.

It appears, however, this may be in connection with an earlier incident involving a search for a suspicious man.

Around 9:00 a.m., there was a report to park rangers of a man dressed in camouflage at the Visitor Center.

Philadelphia and transit police assisted in the manhunt.

Approximately 45 minutes later, it appeared the search was scaled back, if not called off entirely.

Then at around 12:30 p.m., park rangers escorted a man outside the Visitor Center who was wearing a camouflage jacket.

Though the agents remained silent, the man spoke to Action News while being taken away in handcuffs.

Authorities say a man wearing a full camouflage suit inside the Visitor’s Center quickly drew the attention of police.

Philadelphia police lieutenant Joe McGarrey says they caught up with him inside a vehicle in the underground parking garage.

“The car was full of trash. So as a precaution on the safe side, we cleared it with K-9, cleared it with the bomb squad.”

Again, nothing dangerous was found but the man was taken into custody for questioning. No charges have been filed. http://www.philly.com/philly/news/breaking/20130421_Independence_Vi...

Concerns about the possible existence of a bomb had closed the tourist site shortly after noon. It reopened just before 1:30 p.m.

Lt. Joseph McGarrey said the center was evacuated after a "suspicious person" dressed in camouflage fatigues and driving a vehicle loaded with many "items" - including paper and clothing - was detained for questioning.
