MANSFIELD – Local resident Michael Skidmore will face a felonious assault charge following a fight Thursday morning at the Richland County Administration Building.
Richland County Sheriff Steve Sheldon announced the charge at a press conference Thursday afternoon. He said Skidmore is accused of assaulting two security officers while they were trying to restrain him. After the incident, both officers sought treatment at OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.
Security officers Tim Norris and Chuck Kochis were punched in the head and received cuts to the arms and hands in the scuffle, Sheldon said. Kochis was bit on the face, he added.
Both have since been released.
The injuries happened when Norris and Kochis were called into a public commissioner's meeting at 9:44 a.m. to remove Skidmore for alleged inappropriate behavior.
From what information sheriff's deputies have gathered, they believe Skidmore was upset commissioners were about to enter into executive session, requiring all attendees to leave. He asked to see the clerk's name tag, which was turned around. Sheldon said they believe Skidmore grabbed the clerk's shoulder, causing commissioners to complain the move was inappropriate.

MANSFIELD – The Ohio Bureau of Investigation searched Michael Skidmore's home after his arrest Thursday related to a fight at the courthouse.
The BCI was asked to investigate the case and served the search warrant Thursday night, spokeswoman Jill Del Greco confirmed Friday. The News Journal has requested a copy of the search warrant and the affidavit but has not received the public records.
According to records provided by the Richland County Sheriff's Office, Skidmore lives at 719 Bricker Road, a Shelby address, although the home is outside the city.
Skidmore was arraigned Friday morning on charges of felonious assault, and Mansfield Municipal Court Magistrate Phil Naumoff set his bond at $100,000 cash.
