The US has filed sealed criminal charges for the attack in Benghazi, Libya, last year in which the US ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed, media reports said on Tuesday.

The Justice Department said it had no comment on the reports by CNN and the Wall Street Journal, but that its investigation was ongoing and remained a top priority. It was not clear how many people had been charged and what the charges were.

President Barack Obama's administration has been under domestic pressure to find those responsible for the 11 September 2012 attack on a US diplomatic and intelligence outpost. Under questioning from lawmakers in May, attorney general Eric Holder said investigators had made "very, very, very substantial progress".

"We are at a point where we have taken steps that I would say are definitive, concrete, and we are – we will be prepared shortly I think to reveal all that we have done," said Holder, the chief US law enforcement official.
