No I do not wear a mask in public to go to grocery store and such other places for shopping. Medical facilities attempt to force those entering to wear masks. They really have no authority to do so though. Example is the VA clinics say that a patient must wear a mask.

Wearing any of the home made cloth masks does absolutely nothing to protect the wearer or the people around them from any viral disease.  Viral particles are so small that these would penetrate any cloth mask.  A mask produced of other materials that have specific filtration capability can protect others from those infected with TB and other airborne transmitted diseases. A perfect example is health care workers caring for patients in an isolation room in the hospital.  In this case the N 95 mask is used. Surgeons, nurses, and other health care workers wear conventional surgical  masks in the hospital environment to protect the patient when involved with invasive procedures such as surgery. There are also special masks with higher filtration that are used when using lasers in surgery to protect the health care providers from the plume generated by the laser impacting on tissue. 

I speak from experience as I was an OR nurse and worked for 30 years in that environment.  I wore a surgical mask for many hours a day during the course of surgical procedures without any ill effects. But those with respiratory and other health conditions would be subjected to a health risk by wearing a mask. 

Wearing masks by the average person in public only protects them from gnats and mosquitoes in the warm weather outside. 

Other than that the mandating of mask wearing is only for control.  Your right to refuse to wear the mask can be enforced with  support from the Americans with Disabilities Act and OSHA. For healthcare workers that wear the N95 mask there are specific criteria for wearing such a mask. These include fit testing and medical clearance for the worker to wear such mask in their job.
