Iran Quds Force commander killed in US strike on convoy at Baghdad airport

3 Jan, 2020 01:14 / Updated 45 minutes ago

"The head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, Qassem Soleimani, has been killed in a strike near Baghdad International Airport, along with senior leaders of the Iraqi Shia militia, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has confirmed.

News of the commander’s demise was carried by Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency, citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The high-profile assassinations come as tensions soar between Tehran and Washington over recent events in Iraq. An American air raid on an Iraqi Shia militia last weekend triggered a heated protest at the US embassy complex in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone on Tuesday, where demonstrators smashed windows, lit fires and chanted “Death to America.” Washington claimed the raid was in retaliation for a militia rocket attack on a US base in Kirkuk, and that Iran provided backing for the assault, though it offered no evidence." NEW YORK TIMES PUBLISHED STORY ABOUT HYPOTHETICAL MILITARY ATTACK ON SULEIMANI IN BAGHDAD HOURS BEFORE STRIKE

Hypersonic Missiles Are a Game Changer

"Moreover, hypersonics are a weaponized moral hazard for states with a taste for intervention, because they erase barriers to picking fights. Is an adversary building something that might be a weapons factory? Is there an individual in an unfriendly country who cannot be apprehended? What if the former commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Qassim Suleimani, visits Baghdad for a meeting and you know the address? The temptations to use hypersonic missiles will be many." Those "no evidence" accusations are too common. Especially as to starting big wars. The Maine, the Gulf of Tonkin, Douma....

This was the fifth country outlined in the PNAC document drew up before 911, whose goals were to engage in war with the countries listed. I guess we're going to see how much Russia will back them and to what degree Iran will retaliate.
