Just old fashioned asbestos poisoning (though there could have been other toxic fumes in the burning ruins that added to the problem), and a flock of government officials telling them that "it's fine. No need to wear resperators, just cart that shit away and ship it off to China before somebody finds some evidence in our crime scene!"

Yeah, don't really know why John Stewart would even be there but it's possible he has family member or neighbor that got him into lending his fame to the issue. Also I think Luke Rudowski stepped away to keep him from letting the smears he gets roll off his shoulders and on to the responders so I guess some kind of infamous front man other than him is useful.
