OUT OF THE FRYING PAN…

In my preface to Friday’s news bulletin, I mentioned that the coronavirus phenomenon bears all the hallmarks of a pandemic training exercise, but that if it continues into weeks, we can call it for what it is – a coup d’étât.

A flood of emails followed. A coup de WHAT?? One dictionary definition describes the term as ‘a sudden, decisive exercise of force in politics; especially the violent overthrow or alteration of an existing government by a small group’.

On the basis of an already locked-down nation cowering under some sort of global threat from ‘a killer virus’, draconian emergency powers are now being considered by the British government that will effectively sweep away centuries of ancient and hard-fought-for civil and personal liberties.

The stage is set for violence of the street. Most of the public are already quaking in their fluffy slippers under the stairs, plastic tubs on their heads, amid towering piles of Andrex and pasta. What problem are they likely to have if government, egged on by the medical virus maniacs, slam down a total embargo of movement, introducing summary arrest and a host of other exciting banana-republic sanctions – all for your protection, of course. ‘Save me! Save me!’ Sneeze! Cough! Hack!

Several politicians, however, have suddenly started saying, “Hang on a minute….”
