I think this is why AG Sessions recused himself from the Mueller investigation, so he would be separated from the investigation when the information was passed on from IG Michael E. Horowitz.

Michael E. Horowitz was confirmed as Inspector General for the Department of Justice (DOJ) by the U.S. Senate on March 29, 2012.
The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is a statutorily created independent entity whose mission is to detect and deter waste, fraud, abuse, and misconduct in DOJ programs and personnel, and to promote economy and efficiency in those programs. The OIG investigates alleged violations of criminal and civil laws by DOJ employees and also audits and inspects DOJ programs. The Inspector General, who is appointed by the President subject to Senate confirmation, reports to the Attorney General and Congress. 2-19-2015 Concerning the failure of the FBI to turn over documents to the OIG about DOJ in an ongoing investigation about the use of subpoenas to obtain and utilize bulk data collections. The OIG now has all this information, thanks to Rep. Jason Chaffetz introducing HR 6450 on 12-7-16 The Inspector General Empowerment Act, which became public law 114-317 on 12-16-16.
The OIG then compiled 1.2 million documents concerning this investigation, summarized in the 4 page memo.
