WTRH-AM Shortwave Radio Alignment Page

I used to have a discussion about me getting a new shortwave radio, but this got out too fast and it ended up on google.    I decided to put my review here instead of the discussion page since there was no privacy on the group.

Coby Electronics makes alot of junky radios, but since I have a little experitse on how to get them onto 12160 kHz.   First let me give you some information that I reviewed from Amazon.com and then I will give you tips on how to align the radio to receive 12160 kHz.    I could not release this information cause non members from google and the gov't would record this information.   This radio after it's tuned right can receive breaking news information from 12160 or 4840 kHz.    If this information got out, this radio would start selling out too quick and the price for this radio would go up like gas prices.   Main reason why I took the radio discussion off the site cause of google and non members.     Also this page would be blocked out somehow.

When I first got, I was happy that I got it today. I opened the package and put 2 AA batteries in and started tuning around with it. During the day the frequencies were quite limited and I was lucky to hear some stations on the 19 meter band, the frequency range was the 49 Meter band to the 15 meter band, it did receive alot of shortwave signals on the 49 meter band. The one thing that is lacking is the 25 meter band 11.0 to 13.0 MHz, the 60 meter band 4.0 to 6.0 MHz. It's a very good portable shortwave radio to keep around and use for bandscanning.

MW - 514 to 1726 kHz - AM Broadcast Band
SW 1 - 5.47 to 6.69 MHz - 49 meter band
SW 2 - 6.69 to 7.57 MHz - 41 meter band
SW 3 - 8.37 to 9.50 MHz - 32 meter band
SW 4 - 9.52 to 10.88 MHz - 31 meter band
SW 5 - 13.08 to 16.45 MHz - 19 meter band
SW 6 - 14.85 to 18.40 MHz - 16 meter band
SW 7 - 19.99 to 23.65 MHz - 15 meter band
FM - 87.30 to 108.8 MHz - FM Broadcast Band

I would highly recommend that you get a wire antenna for this radio to receive shortwave radio signals. The disadvantage is the AM band, someone in China did not tune the AM band properly so signals on 10 kHz is 15 kHz which means that 790 kHz is 795 kHz, 1050 kHz is 1055 kHz. The FM band works really good, but it does receive most local signals, but 100.5 FM is bleeding some parts of the band.

This shortwave radio is a great starter radio, but I would recommend you get a real shortwave radio with continous coverage. This radio only receives strong and weak shortwave signals on the assigned international broadcast bands. If you use a wire antenna you will not have a problem receiving signals from all over the world.

HERE IS MORE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT TUNING SHORTWAVE

Ok, here is a way to get 12160 on your el cheapo shortwave radio called the CX-CB91.   First, 12160 is located on the 25 meter band, the factory did not align it properly.

1. When you open the radio, you must take out 1 screw.

2. Open the case.  You take the other 2 screws and release the front panel off.

3. Then take the batteries and place electrical tape to hold the batteries in place.

4. Then you see a screw on the LCD board unscrew the LCD board.

5. Don't forget the white plastic switch.

6. Take a tuning tool and adjust it to these important ranges from SW 1 and 7.

7. The green RF tuning coil is for SW 1 to 4 those are for lower frequencies.   But remember do NOT touch

the variable tuning capacitor screws, those are for the FM and AM bands only!   Do NOT touch the RED RF tuning coil next to the green tuning coil.   The White RF tuning coil is for SW 5 to 7

8.  Please prepare these ranges :

SW  1 - 5.78 to 7.12  MHz  - 49 Meter Band - GREEN RF CAN

SW  2 - 7.06 to 8.02  MHz  - 41 Meter Band - GREEN RF CAN

SW  3 - 8.82 to 10.06 MHz - 31 Meter Band - GREEN RF CAN

SW  4 - 10.02 to 11.52 MHz - 30 Meter Band - GREEN RF CAN

SW  5 - 11.06 to  13.97 MHz - 25 Meter Band - WHITE RF CAN  - < 12160 IS HERE!!

SW  6 - 12.56 to  15.66 MHz - 19 Meter Band - WHITE RF CAN

SW  7 -  17.00 to 20.17 MHz - 16 Meter Band - WHITE RF CAN

Test it to make sure it tunes 12160 on SW 5.   Remember when you get this radio, the bands will not be ready to use until you do this modification.    I received alot of signals doing this.

After you are done, put the white holder piece back in place and then reassemble the radio back the way you got it apart.   Have a friend do this or someone with expertise in electronics.   Just share this page with them and share it with others.  Hopefully Coby Electronics will correct this problem.   The AM bands and FM bands don't need to be modified.    Most the ranges before this modifications does not have nothing on shortwave except utility signals and the international broadcast bands is what we need to listen to.  This radio does not have a SSB demodulator.    SW 1 and 2 does have access to the 40 meter ham band, and SW 6 has access to the 20 meter ham band, but you will need a SSB demodulator.

NOTE:   You can tune down SW 1 to reach 4840 kHz using the green coil, but will will cut out WWV and the rest of the 31 meter band, if you listen to radio during the night more than during the day, then you may need to tune the SW band down to 4.5 MHz to 6.0 MHz if you listen to Alex Jones only at night.    The white coil configuration will not be affected just the SW 1 to 4 ranges.

This radio retails for $9.99 or more, and it's a very good emergency radio after this modification is done.  Coby Electronics has some lazy RF engineers over there, and it's our turn to get this to tune the right shortwave frequencies.   The reception for 12160 kHz is very clear on a 9 dollar radio!!
