Heres something Ive been wondering about for quite some time.A person puts money into social security for retirement.Say when this person dies they will get a 255 dollar death benefit.Wooo Hoooo. Say if this person has 50,000 dollars in this fund, and I would think it would go to their remaining family.Does it? I mean 255 dollars to be buried is ludricus these days. But heck the dead guy aint gonna care right. So what happens if this person has no wife or kids, but has brothers an sisters, would the remaining money in their account go to them? Or does the gov get whts left? Just wondering.

The unused money does not go to beneficiaries. It stays in the fund to be used by those who actually live long enough to start collecting. To leave something to your beneficiaries, you need a life insurance policy.

Are Beneficiaries / co-owners named in the contract?

It's not a savings account, it's an insurance program which is to say it is more a gamble than a  zero sum game. If you die young then you and your family may never see a penny besides that $255 death benefit. If you live to be 110 you will never be cut off just because you paid in much less than you've collected. Like any insurance scheme, casino game or wallstreet investment there are winners and losers.
