Hostages Possibly Held in Inglewood Standoff; 2 Officers Wounded

A man who shot at officers, leaving two wounded,  remained barricaded inside an Inglewood home – possibly with hostages – on  Wednesday afternoon, several hours after the standoff began.

Multiple rounds were exchanged after officers responded to a “family  disturbance,” with the gunman first firing and then police returning  fire, Inglewood police Lt. Oscar Mejia said at a news conference at  4:30, about four hours after the incident began.

A video taken by a neighbor recorded the sound shouting and many shots being  fired.

Two wounded officers were treated at Centinela Hospital Medical Center, with  one released and the other later taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

An armored SWAT vehicle could be seen where  the incident was taking place near the intersection of 108th Street and Fifth  Avenue in Inglewood (map). Dozens of police cars lined nearby streets.

A crisis  negotiations team was attempting to communicate with the armed man inside the  home, where it was possible multiple people were inside with the gunman, Mejia  said. The existence or number of hostages had not been confirmed, he  said.

“Obviously, it’s a very delicate situation. We’d like to resolve this  peacefully without any injuries,” Mejia said. ”We are treating it as it  hostage situation. … There may be additional people inside the residence.  It’s unsure at this time how many additional people could be inside.”

Residents in the area were warned to stay inside their homes and not leave  until an officer or deputy comes to help them evacuate the area, Mejia said.

Inglewood  police Capt. James Madia initially said he was told that one woman was being  held. A female was involved in the incident, police said at the news  conference.

The extent of the injuries to the officer who was shot were unknown, however  he was expected to survive, according Madia.

A female officer was also wounded in the incident, but suffered only minor  injuries, Madia said.

The two were hospitalized in good and stable condition, Mejia said at the  news conference.

Although police originally indicated both officers had been shot, Madia later  confirmed that one of the officers suffered injuries unrelated to the  shooting.

Residents were asked to stay indoors and lock  their doors, Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Keith Mora  said.

“Just please stay out of the area,” Mora said. “…It is a quite dynamic  situation. It’s kind of dangerous to be out in the street. If you don’t need to  be there, please stay out of the area.”

The area was described as quiet by a neighbor, who said she had never  witnesses any trouble associated with the home where the alleged shooter was  barricaded was.

The brother of the woman who lives in the home was yelling at police to get  his sister out of the home, said Kimberly Edwards, who lives across the  street.

“Terrified. I’m still terrified,” Edwards said. “I just can’t believe it. I  think I’m in shock… We’re working people and we’re not used to this kind of  thing. “

Two females were being held hostage inside an Inglewood home by a gunman who opened fire on officers, police said Wednesday evening.

One of the hostages, believed to be about 14 years old, received a laceration when the man tried to drag her by her hair outside the home moments before officers arrived Wednesday afternoon in the 10700 block of 5th Avenue, Inglewood police said. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-two-females-being-held-...
