Two Dallas ISD custodial supervisors said they were placed on administrative leave Monday because it took too long to clean five schools affected by the city’s Ebola case and because they supplied hazmat suits to the custodians who cleaned the schools.
The two supervisors -- Marion Castro and Jose Guererro -- said they couldn’t complete the cleanup in one day because the district didn’t provide help to work through the night.
“They were going to send help. Nobody came. We didn’t have help,” said Castro, a custodial supervisor for schools in and around Vickery Meadow. “If you are going to let me go, let me go for a good reason. Don’t let me go for something you didn’t do.”
Dallas ISD spokesman André Riley declined to address specific questions about Guerrero and Castro, citing personnel reasons. Castro provided The Dallas Morning News with a letter both men received saying they are on paid administrative leave following “allegations of potential misconduct.”
Riley said, however, that the district provided additional custodians and disinfectant to each of the five schools -- Conrad High, Tasby Middle and Lowe, Rogers and Hotchkiss elementaries.
Castro disputed that. He said the district provided goggles, gloves and masks but not additional cleaning supplies. He said, as far as he knew, the only extra help was from two workers from the Environmental Services Department who were at Lowe and Tasby but left before the cleaning was complete.
Guererro, who is Castro’s boss, said he ordered the haz-mat suits from the district’s supply warehouse out of extra caution for his workers. Guerrero said he was compelled to buy them because he contracted polio in 1996, when he was a DISD custodial field supervisor. He cannot walk and uses a wheelchair.

"Guerrero said he got ill on Thanksgiving Day 1996 and was diagnosed with polio at Parkland Memorial Hospital. He said that doctors extracted fluid from his spine three times to confirm he had polio.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there were 162 cases of polio between 1980 and 1999. Almost all were vaccine-associated paralytic polio. Guerrero said doctors believe he contracted polio from his young niece, who had been recently vaccinated. He was 26 at time and had received the vaccination himself when he was younger."
Oh my god...this just makes me sick inside!
