Date: 24.08.2018 | Reading duration: 2 minutes

A dream vacation in Northern Italy ended in tragedy for a student from Hessen: after she was thrown from a cliff 50 to 70 meters high and now lies in hospital. Police are now investigating an attempted murder.

A young woman's holiday changed dramatically: when on 31st July the German student was thrown off the 50 to 70 meters high Italian Sanremo cliff. Now investigators seek to question the 21-year-old from Hessen. It is "imperative that the authorities conduct independent interview with young woman, said Barbara Brescia, state attorney for Imperia. In Italy, a 32-year-old is being held in custody.

German and Italian authorities are investigating. According to Italian media reports, the 32-year-old suspect comes from Tunisia and is in Italy illegally. He is being accused of attempted murder and sexual violence.

The mother of the victim has returned to Germany, following charges being pressed against an unnamed individual. The allegation is attempted murder and rape, stated a police spokesperson in Kassel on Friday. The newspaper "Hessische/Niedersächsische Allgemeine" had previously reported on this.

The suspect is alleged to have thrown the 21-year-old from the Capo Nero coastline on the night of July 31st . According to Italian media reports the victim and the accused were arguing. The suspect denies all charges.

Victim is a student in Marburg

The suspect claims that they spent the evening together. After drinking in a Sanremo bar, they drove to Capo Nero. He denies having physically attacked or even worse, pushed her off the edge. He claims poor memory of that evening ", said the suspect's lawyer, Damiris Bellini, according to the Italian news agency Ansa. The 32-year-old claims he had attempted to save the woman falling off the cliff.

According to the German police the student lives in Marburg and comes from Kassel. She was severely injured in the accident and is now lies in hospital in Italy. Italian authorities state that she is now out of a coma and should be taken to Germany.

Until recently, all information in possession of the German police comes from the statement of the victim's mother. As far there have been no further announcements from the Italian authorities about the current state of the investigation, said the police spokesperson  " We have the greatest confidence in the authorities on the spot."

The Federal Foreign Office, in Berlin, are unaware of the event. The Consulate General in Milan is investigating.

21-jährige Studentin Deutsche stürzt in Italien von Klippe - Ermittlungen wegen Mordversuchs

Stand: 24.08.2018 | Lesedauer: 2 Minuten
