The question is who went to the others event looking for a fight and there wouldn't have been a fight if they had not gone? Who were the trouble-makers?
Cernovich was inside the event at the FREQNYC nightclub on W. 50th St. when the fisticuffs broke out about 10:30 p.m. "I saw him hit the old man," said witness Ali Thomas, 24. "One hit. He swung hard. He hit him hard. The old man's head hit the curb." The 911 caller said initially that the 56-year-old was in cardiac arrest after the fight, according to fire officials. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, officials noted. Cops arrested the alleged assailant, David Campbell of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, authorities said.
Campbell, 30, was charged with assault for strangulation, possession of a weapon, assault of a police officer, resisting arrest and loitering, police said Sunday morning.
Two more people were hurt in the brawl. One person was taken to Mount Sinai St. Luke's, while another went to Bellevue. Their conditions and involvement in the gala were not known.
Cernovich later emerged from the event and confronted a group of demonstrators.
"These guys are f-----g terrorists," Cernovich said.
The Night for Freedom event — billed as a "gathering of patriots and political dissidents who are bored with mainstream political events" — featured a comedy routine, speeches and a deejay set.
Perhaps the most surprising guest at the event was Chelsea Manning, the transgender former Army private convicted of the largest leak of classified documents in American history.
It was not clear why Manning, who was planning to run for a Maryland Senate seat as a Democrat, attended the conservative gala.
Several guests walked past a phalanx of demonstrators on their way into the event, sparking shouting matches.
I'm trying to get to the sense of it all. In any civilized world band of masked mobsters running amok would be dealt with swiftly. There must be a reason why they seem to be allowed to roam free.
Who benefits?
“Proud Boys” brawled with protesters after their leader held a rally at the vandalized Manhattan GOP headquarters on the Upper East Side, officials said Saturday.
No serious injuries were reported during what witnesses described as multiple violent clashes with the “Western chauvinist” group.
Witnesses described a number of bare-knuckle fights where combatants ended up wrestling on the sidewalk.
In another incident, someone flashed a sword before cops ordered him back into his car.
The man — identified by some as Proud Boys leader Gavin McInnes, who was the main speaker at the rally — drove off without getting arrested, witnesses said.
“Followed the Proud Boys as they left the event,” photojournalist Shay Horse tweeted. “About 1-2 blocks away a 30 (proud boys) vs. 3 fight broke out.”
“It ended with 30 proud boys pummeling a guy on the ground screaming, ‘ARE YOU BRAVE NOW F-----?!’” he wrote.
The Proud Boys then posed for a picture on the street before going to an East Side bar, he tweeted, adding that “many fights were happening at once.
The fisticuffs broke out about 8:40 p.m. on Third Ave. and E. 84th St., near the Metropolitan Republican Club’s clubhouse, where, earlier in the day, vandals sprayed anarchy symbols on its doors.
Cops arrested three protesters accused of attacking a 30-year-old New Jersey man leaving the rally. During the brawl, the protesters took his backpack, which contained his wallet, police said.
The three men, all city residents, were charged with robbery, harassment and assault, cops said.
