Ron Paul for President? CPAC voters say yes in straw poll; Mitt Romney comes in second

Donald Trump may not believe he can win an election, but Ron Paul won the straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Paul, whose son recently won a Congressional seat of his own, led the tally with 30% of the vote. Mitt Romney came in second with 23%.

Most experts agree that the straw poll tally means little for Paul. Romney won the straw vote in 2007, 2008 and 2009 but couldn’t get close to John McCain during primary season.

According to Fox News, one CPAC official even expressed frustration that the conservative caucus couldn't pick a more credible contender - a sentiment expressed by Trump earlier in the convention.

"I think he's a good guy," Trump said on Thursday. "But honestly, he just has zero chance of getting elected. You have to win an election."

Romney and Paul were the only two contenders who reached double digits in the poll. New Jersey governor Chris Christie, who has repeatedly denied he wants the nomination, came in tied for third with 6% of the vote. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is said to be gearing up for a run, tallied 5%. Trailing behind them, the ever-outspoken Michele Bachmann, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels earned 4% of the tally each.

Sarah Palin, who did not appear at the convention, earned 3% of the vote.

then you hear about donald trump making public statements about ron paul saying, "i think he's a great guy but he has zero percent chance of winning in 2012." if DT was for the people on main street and NOT wall street he would try to form public opinion in OUR favor from his socialite/entrepreneurial platform of influence but nooooo...

...dumb ass. Ron Paul could win if influential celebrities like Mr. Trump backed and supported him and encouraged the rest of us to do so.

Ron Paul energized and took this revolution to the next level in 2007-2008. as of right now he clearly has the most potential. i've been out of the loop for about a yr or so, so i'm not sure what the scientific polls are predicting but i am willing to wager the populace vote remembers rp's showing and far more will stand by him a second time around.

I don't like Ron Paul. To me he is a clone of all the others in Congress-empty suit. Sorry cause you all seem to like him but thats what America is about.

Normally the non scientific/non random sample straw polls in the various PAC's and Party's gauge the politically active and politically informed* (or misinformed). The reason the populous continues to pick the globalists is due to the media giving them a BS reality a false selection and outlook on life. If we can just reach those people and simple give them an informed choice not necessarily convince them but just give them the truth and facts I'll bet we can win primary's.

"Why? The Texas congressman and 2008 presidential candidate almost always does. While his ardent supporters aren’t numerous enough to win him actual primaries or caucuses, they’ve mastered the unofficial straw poll format and they’ve decided those informal polls send an important message. Case in point: The Paul forces are already organizing for June’s Republican Leadership Conference and Ronald Reagan Centennial Celebration straw poll and Iowa’s traditional Ames straw poll in August." http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0211/49391.html

Leave it to the media to try to down play RP at every turn ... There are 10000 votes at CPAC i believe and only 700 RP seats do the math thats 7% of the votes, the other 23% (Romneys total) are general conservitaves ... meaning that if you where to remove the RP base from the vote RP and Romney would be neck and neck. You know its one thing for the media and asshats like Trump to discount Pauls ability to win but I'm sick of hearing people in our own movement continue that BS like "he doesn't have a chance might as well not try." I could give many examples of an underdog winning but you likely know them well, trying is half the battle.
