YouTube considers charging for movies

YOUTUBE is considering streaming movies for rental, a move that would see the free video-sharing site charging for content for the first time, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The newspaper, citing "people familiar with the company's plans," said Google-owned YouTube is holding talks with major movie studios including Lions Gate Entertainment Corp, Sony Corp and Warner Bros about integrating newer titles for rental.

"Negotiations are continuing and there are no guarantees a deal will be struck," the newspaper said.

YouTube, known mainly for its user-contributed amateur videos, already has struck deals with some studios to screen clips and full-length movies but does not currently charge for anything on the site.

YouTube recently announced an agreement with US media and entertainment giant Time Warner to show clips from Time Warner property Warner Bros with advertising revenue being split between them.

Google bought YouTube in 2006 for $US1.65 billion ($1.98 billion) but the Mountain View, California-based internet search and advertising giant has not yet managed to turn a profit with the site despite its massive global popularity.

The Wall Street Journal said that while details varied from studio to studio, "generally speaking the agreements (under discussion) would allow consumers to stream movies on a rental basis for a fee".

"In some cases, these titles might be available on the site on the same day that they come out on DVD," the newspaper said.

It said new movie rentals were likely to cost around $US3.99 ($4.80), the price Apple charges for new movie rentals through iTunes.

The "Time Warner Agreement" is in short a covert controlling interest takeover by the MSM yet again, of what used to be a network for independent users. YouTube and Time Warner were not on the best of terms with one another for a while but, for around two years now YT has been obligated to remove or disable user videos at the bequest of Time Warner.

TW is almost entirely the reason why so many YT videos have there sound disabled, by some accounts, about 250,000 videos have been effected in the last two years. "This video contains a audio track that has not been authorized by WMG, the audio has been disabled" WMG (Warner Media Group) insists, apparently legally, that YT run every upload through a scanner that identifies audio watermarks. I'm led to believe the watermarks can be destroyed with enough tinkering of the file but I haven't been successful yet, they are very persistent having been designed to survive changes both in file format and bit rate samples.

No doubt this new movie deal will only strengthen the MSM corporate strangle hold on YT and ultimately see the elimination of uploads by users.
