No April Fools' Joke: Another Cold Blast

Shivering Start to April

Given the timing, you would think we were playing a cruel April Fools' Day joke as we look at the forecast to start out next week.

A cold front will usher in yet another blast of late-season arctic air that will charge into the central and eastern states after a brief warmup to near-average temperatures over Easter weekend. Of course, this only piles on to the misery of what has been a very frustratingly cold March east of the Rockies.

The first hints of this next blast of arctic air show up on our Easter Sunday high temperature map.

A strong cold front accompanied by gusty winds will move across the Upper Midwest during the day, dropping temperatures in the Dakotas, Minnesota and northern Wisconsin.

Highs in the 20s and 30s are expected in Fargo, N.D. and Minneapolis to name a couple of spots.

April Fools' Day (Monday) is when the cold air really drives southward.

As you can see in the comparison of the forecast maps to the right, highs in the 30s and 40s will replace 60s and a few low 70s from Colorado and Kansas to Missouri and the lower-Ohio Valley. This will result in a 20+ degree temperature drop for cities such as St. Louis, Kansas City and Denver.

Overall, temperatures will be 10 to 25 degrees below average across the majority of the Midwest states.

Fans heading to Opening Day Major League Baseball games will need to bundle up in Minneapolis (Tigers vs. Twins), Chicago (Royals vs. White Sox), Cincinnati (Angels vs. Reds) and Pittsburgh (Cubs vs. Pirates).

In addition to the cold, it's not out of the question that some wet snow or rain mixed with wet snow could develop in the aforementioned corridor from Kansas and Missouri to the lower-Ohio Valley.

Next, we say goodbye to those 70s and 80s in the South as we look at Tuesday's forecast.

It was warm in Dallas today, but cool tonight.  Supposed to rain for the next couple days.
