Big Brother Auto Insurance Plans Pose Privacy Concerns | Print |  E-mail

Is saving 30 percent on your car insurance enough to justify granting Big Brother access to your vehicle? That’s the question many consumers and industry analysts are asking, as more auto insurance companies offer new options that calculate premiums based on a person’s driving habits, rather than set variables such as age, gender, and past driving records.

Frustration leads to misjudgment...

Less I have to relay a incident that happened to me recently. I acquired a SUV that was a second vehicle. Well to make a long story short, the SUV was wrecked, my insurance company gave me a total value on a 2001 of $3300 and change, saying it was a total loss do to the fact that the repairs would amount to more than 70% of the value of the vehicle. I told them that this was not even close to blue book value. They said to me that the value of my SUV was determined by taking my zip code and plugging it into the computer and taking a radius of so many miles around me of vehicles close to mine for sale, and averaging them to determine the value of my SUV.  Which came to the above stated amount. This vehicle had been cared for to the extreme. It had many additions to the body,( I know as it came from a family member very close to me) and with the ability to do the required maintenance, and up-grades. Now I am required to either take below blue book value on my SUV and declare it a total loss which it is not (and let them piece it out for way more than they are giving me), or retain the vehicle and proceed with a vehicle that I can no longer carry full cover on ( a lot of good that done) because the title will state salvage on it, and take the amount declared minus my deducible.  You are right about getting shafted with these companies. I am so frustrated! Thanks for letting me rant. I really needed that. It just seems there is no break for the little man! Which is just what they want! Frustration leads to misjudgement.
