A little over two years after this speech Finland was attacked by Soviet Union, and the nation had to take a formiddable task to defend against practically the rest of the world. Today the war is on a different level, more cunning and underhanded.

THE SPEECH

"My brothers-in-arms, soldiers, Civil Guards and veterans.

Seeing now the ranks of Finland's White Army, the Finnish Armed Forces and the Civil Guards gathered before me, I am filled with gratitude for the trust you once gave me.

When I came to you 19 years ago, I was nothing other than an unknown general to you, but you entrusted me with your confidence and I placed my faith in the Finnish peasant, from this mutual trust a fellowship has formed which only death can dissolve.

I demanded more of you than your brief training entitled me to, but still we reached our goal. The warrior spirit of the Finnish peasant in 1918 lightened my soul with pride of belonging to this people.

I am confident that the valiant spirit of the peasant army will pass down to generations and forever guide our young army and enkindle the men in its ranks.

Long live Finland's Defence Forces."
