Plane crash kills 2, injures 75 at US air show

A vintage airplane crashed into the box seat area at an air show at Reno-Stead Airport in the southwestern US, injuring at least 75 people. Two people were killed in the crash, including the pilot, Jimmy Leeward, say medical officials. Some 25 people in critical condition were sent to hospital. “There are people lying all over the runway,” said eyewitnesseses. “One guy was cut in half. There’s blood everywhere.” A P-51 Mustang plane seemed to have lost control, pulling straight up and then coming down into people in the stands. No explosion followed the plane hitting the ground. The National Championship Air Races attract thousands of people to the state of Nevada every September to watch various military and civilian planes race.

This Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010 photo, shows long time Reno Air Race pilot Jimmy Leeward with his P51 Mustang. A spokesman for Reno's National Championship Air Races says the P-51 Mustang that crashed into a box seat area at the front of the grandstand Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, at the air race was piloted by Leeward. An official reported Friday that Leeward was killed in the crash. (AP Photo/The Reno Gazette-Journal, Marilyn Newton)
