GEISMAR, LA (WAFB) -
Authorities report there has been an explosion at a plant in the Geismar area and it is on fire.
Residents in St. Gabriel are being asked to shelter in place from Highway 3115 to Highway 74 as a precaution.
According to Louisiana State Police, it is the Williams Olefins plant on LA 3115.
The Iberville Office of Emergency Preparedness says seven injuries were reported to them. Emergency crews are on the scene.
LSP is sending a hazardous materials team to the fire.
Troopers said LA 74 and LA 30 at LA 3115 are closed.
According to the Williams Olefine plant website, the facility annually produces approximately 1.3 billion pounds of ethylene and 90 million pounds of polymer grade propylene.
The Olefin team is responsible for the ethane transportation business consisting of approximately 200 miles of pipelines, as well as a refinery-grade propylene splitter.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.
