Nothing new:

November 2011 - G20 summit, Cannes: Invigorated by the Occupy movement, about 10,000 protesters gather to decry corporate greed and the modern financial system. They are met by 12,000 French riot police.

July 2010 - G20 summit, Toronto: 10,000 people demonstrate for environmental causes and against globalisation. Violence erupts between demonstrators and police amid accusations of vandalism and police brutality.

April 2009 - G20 summit, London: The world's leaders gather for the first major summit since the collapse of Lehman Brothers and thousands of protesters clash with police in the streets of London. Newspaper vendor Ian Tomlinson is killed after a confrontation with officers.

July 2005 - G8 summit protests, Edinburgh. About 200,000 marchers in the "Make Poverty History" campaign. While largely peaceful about 200 protesters famously breached a fence surrounding the hotel where the summit was held. Around 700 arrests are made throughout the demonstrations.

July 2001 - G8 summit protests, Genoa" Widespread violence in the Italian city. A 23-year-old demonstrator is shot and killed by police while dozens of others are arrested.
