FDA Warns of Bone Fracture with Heartburn Drugs

(AP) Federal health regulators are warning doctors and patients that popular heartburn drugs like Nexium and Prilosec may cause bone fractures when used for more than a year.

The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday several studies have shown increased risk of hip, wrist and spine fractures in patients using drugs that block stomach acid. The agency said a half-dozen studies tracked fractures in patients older than 50 when the drugs were used between one and 12 years.

The agency says the association between the drugs and bone fractions is still not understood and it plans to investigate further.

The drugs are known as proton pump inhibitors and include both prescription drugs like AstraZeneca's Nexium and Takeda's Prevacid as well as over-the-counter medicines like Prilosec OTC, which is made by Procter & Gamble.

Are Nexium and Prilosec Too Popular?

Combined U.S. sales for the drugs totaled $13.6 billion last year, according to data tracker IMS Health. The drugs were the third best-selling group of prescription drugs in the U.S.

The FDA says all the drugs will carry new warning labels about the potential risk.

"Health care professionals should consider whether a lower dose or shorter duration of therapy would adequately treat the patient's condition," said FDA's Joyce Korvick in a statement.

Why are there so many people with heartburn, stomach problems and acid reflux disease? Could the reason possibly be that over the course of time people have become busier in their everyday lives, have stopped traditional ways of cooking (from scratch) and heavily rely on foods loaded with preservatives and chemicals added as anti-caking agents (almost any powdered substance bought in a bottle or box; spices, gravy mixes, cake and desert mixes) . Maybe it could be the amount of genetically modified foods we are eating and not being warned on a label or told by the stores who sell these products. An article I recently read said that 95 percent of the soybeans sold in the world are from genetically modified seeds. http://www.agriculture.purdue.edu/aganswers/story.asp?storyID=5296 Has anyone checked their cupboards to see which foods they eat on a regular basis contain soybean oil or soybeans? Canola oil which is supposed to be so "healthy" for us comes from soybeans and is sold for roughly $3 a bottle. What the label on our canola oil doesn't tell us is whether or not the soybeans, from which the oil was extracted, were grown from genetically altered seeds. Yet another theory I have is microwaving is bad! So many people microwave their food and don't really know what they are doing to the food itself (besides heating it). From FOLLOWING ARTICLE--- " In commercial models, the oven has a power input of about 1000 watts of alternating current. As these microwaves generated
from the magnetron bombard the food, they cause the polar molecules to rotate at the same frequency millions of times a second. All this agitation creates molecular friction, which heats up the food. The friction also causes substantial damage to the surrounding molecules, often tearing them apart or forcefully deforming them. The scientific name for this deformation is "structural isomerism". " I have been microwave free for over a year, my family thinks I'm crazy, cooking everything from scratch and on the stove, in the oven or the bbq. As my views on our world and government have changed in recent years I don't believe I am crazy, just extremely cautious. Good luck to all of you taking these medications. Personally I would do as much research on what you are eating as possible, cook your food the "old fashioned" way and stop supporting the pharmaceutical companies who are suckking the life and freedom out of our once great nation.

Just like with most medications, they may cure one ill but give you a list of other ills that more times than not trump the original ill you had to begin with. I heard that heartburn in all actuality is an underproduction of acid in your stomach and not an overproduction of it so taking an antacid for heartburn is going to do squat for you anyways. Here's an interesting article about it: Why Stomach Acid is Good For You!
