Tamiflu approved for Canadian babies

Canadian infants under one year old who are sick with the flu may receive the antiviral drug Tamiflu, Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq announced Thursday under new swine flu pandemic guidelines.

The Public Health Agency of Canada prepared the interim guidance to help doctors treating infants with influenza-like illness during the H1N1 pandemic.

"The public health emergency created by the pandemic, and this group's increased vulnerability from influenza, created the urgent circumstances that deemed this necessary," Aglukkaq said.

"Although there are limited data supporting the use of Tamiflu in children under one, there now exists an urgent need for recommendations to treat this population, given this group's increased risk for morbidity and mortality from influenza," the agency said on its website.

Regulators in the United States and Britain have made similar changes, Dr. David Butler-Jones, Canada's chief medical officer of health, told a teleconference with reporters.

Tamiflu 1999 Side Effects
The most common side-effects experienced by participants in the study were nausea and vomiting. These symptoms were mostly mild to moderate and generally occurred within the first two days of administration of the drug. Other less-frequent side-effects included diarrhea, bronchitis, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache, cough, insomnia, vertigo, fatigue.

2007 Update
Tamiflu, a drug used for treating influenza, including human bird flu infection, is to carry a warning in the USA, after reports of cases of delirium, self-harm, hallucinations and suicidal thoughts, mostly among children, were received in Japan. The warning already exists in Japan (Suicides reported).

Between August 2005 - July 2006 there were 103 cases of psychiatric side-effects, of which 68 involved children under 17.

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland (Reuters) - The U.S. government has bought 195 million doses of H1N1 swine flu vaccine for a possible autumn vaccination campaign, a U.S. federal official said Thursday.

The U.S. Health and Human Services Department has also contracted for 120 million doses of adjuvant, a compound to stretch the number of doses of vaccine needed, the department's Dr. Robin Robinson told a meeting of Food and Drug Administration advisers.

Five companies are making H1N1 vaccine for the U.S. market -- AstraZeneca's MedImmune unit, Australia's CSL Ltd, GlaxoSmithKline Plc, Novartis AG and Sanofi-Aventis SA.

Earlier, an FDA official said vaccine makers were only getting about 30 percent as much vaccine from eggs as they usually get with seasonal influenza vaccine.

Robinson said HHS had accounted for this in planning for a possible influenza pandemic.

"We thought manufacturers would probably get a low or poor yield. That has been borne out," Robinson told the meeting.

He said HHS had planned to have 160 million doses available right away, and then 80 million a month afterward. It would take until March at this rate to vaccinate the full U.S. population of 300 million people with two doses each, Robinson said.

The five vaccine-making companies will tell the FDA committee later Thursday about what they have learned as they work with the virus, which spread globally in less than two months.

World Health Organization and U.S. health officials have said they want to start vaccinating people against H1N1, alongside regular seasonal flu, in October. The FDA has to approve this vaccine before it can be used but FDA officials indicated earlier Thursday they would like to speed this process.

Young and old volunteers sought to test swine flu shot

WASHINGTON - The race is on: The government and vaccine-makers are seeking thousands of volunteers, from babies to the elderly, to roll up their sleeves for the first swine flu shots - to test whether a new vaccine really will protect against this novel virus before its expected rebound in the fall.
Yesterday the National Institutes of Health tapped a network of medical centers around the country to begin a series of studies, with the first shots to go into the arms of healthy adults, of any age, in early August. None is in the Philadelphia area.

If there are no immediate safety concerns, such as allergic reactions, testing quickly would begin in children as young as 6 months.

The tests, plus additional research from vaccine manufacturers, are key as the government decides whether to offer swine flu vaccine to millions of Americans starting in mid-October - assuming that enough is produced by then - still a big question as the vaccine is proving hard to make.

It's crucial to test all ages. Unlike regular winter flu that is most dangerous to people over 65 and under 2, this new swine flu that has quickly spread around the globe seems to disproportionately target school-age children, teenagers, and young adults.

Will the results come in time? "It's going to be very, very close," Anthony Fauci, director of NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said.

"We are racing to provide them as much information as we possibly can," said Karen Kotloff of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, who is helping to lead the NIH study. She said doctors and other health workers already were asking about enrolling in the study themselves.

It promises to be a confusing fall, as doctors struggle to administer vaccine against the regular winter flu and tell patients to stay tuned for when and if they can later return for another shot or two of swine flu vaccine.

The test plan: All volunteers will get two swine flu shots, given 21 days apart. By early September, blood tests should show how much immune protection the initial dose triggered - and if a low-dose shot worked or a higher dose was needed. It will take another month to get information on the second shot.

These new vaccines are being fast tracked by the FDA. We are being told they will only be tested for a few weeks on a few hundred children and adults before being given to children in schools in October.


The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) has issued a statement publicly questioning the necessity and safety of administering experimental H1N1 swine flu vaccines to children in schools. NVIC called on the Obama Administration and state Governors to provide evidence to parents that there are vaccine safety screening, recording, monitoring, reporting and vaccine injury compensation mechanisms in place.
