Both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic said they had provided check-in staff and cabin crew with guidance on how to act if they believe a passenger is unwell. Medical advice would be taken to assess the condition of passengers exhibiting symptoms, including having a headache, sore throat, runny nose, and aching muscles. Virgin Atlantic said those suffering from the condition would be prevented from flying until they could provide a fit-to-fly certificate from their doctor or a hospital.

We are pleased that the NVPO is following up on the National Vaccine Plan with an implementation plan. We recommend that this plan include multiyear funding requests, identify the legislative authorities needed to achieve such strategies, and assign offices across government that will take the lead on each goal. The implementation plan should also clearly identify which office will coordinate efforts, as many goals require input and activity from different agencies and partners. The coordinating office should ensure an open and reliable communication stream within and between departments. A model to follow would be the pairing of the National Pandemic

Influenza Strategy with the National Pandemic Influenza Implementation plan, which included specific roles for each federal agency and budget requests from the White House for carrying out the plan, coordinated by Homeland Security Council. This implementation plan should be an evergreen document, reevaluated as the science evolves and evidence of effectiveness becomes available, and progress and results of each benchmark should be made transparent to Congress, researchers, industry, and the public.

Finally, it is imperative that the NVPO integrate its planning with the large infusion of federal dollars ($750 million proposed) into immunizations proposed in the Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act pending in Congress. These additional one-time funds, to be spent over the next 18 months, provide the NVPO with a unique opportunity to ensure that more Americans receive the recommended schedule of vaccines. In particular, the NVPO should consider asking the Secretary to use some of this new funding to provide every adult American with an annual influenza vaccine in 2010. This would be an excellent trial-run for a severe pandemic influenza vaccination program.

Re: CSL clinical vaccine trials in Adelaide.

It was reported on May 29th that the Australian Government had sealed a deal with Commonwealth Serum Laboratories (CSL) to develop a swine flu vaccine.

Apparently though, CSL was already hard at work on development even prior to this date - "For its part CSL was all set to go. It had already taken delivery of the seed strains from California and will now produce small batches to test on ferrets and ultimately on humans." smh.com - May 29, 2009

It was also reported on May 29 that the "US Government placed a $US180 million order for a CSL-made swine flu vaccine". news.com - May 29, 2009

Currently Australia is allegedly witnessing about 1,000 new cases per day of swine flu, about 12,000 total as at 18th July. Around the time that CSL "took delivery of seed strains from California", May 26th, there were 31 cases of H1N1 in Australia. May 29th - 209 cases, June 3rd - 634 cases, June 10th - 1,266 cases.

Interestingly from 1,266 cases nation wide on June 10th, 1,011 of those were found in Melbourne, the location of CSL's facilities.

W.H.O. Goes black no more swine flu coverage


In a move that caught many public health experts by surprise, the World Health Organization quietly announced Thursday that it would stop tracking swine flu cases and deaths around the world.

The announcement, made in a “briefing note” posted on the organization’s Web site late in the day, perplexed some experts, and even baffled a W.H.O. spokesman, Gregory Hartl, who said in an e-mail message, “I don’t have reliable info” about what his agency would track instead.
