Ron Paul: The Ten Principles of a Free Society

This is the Appendix to Ron Paul's forthcoming book, Liberty Defined.

RON PAUL: THE TEN PRINCIPLES OF A FREE SOCIETY

1. Rights belong to individuals, not groups; they derive from our nature and can neither be granted nor taken away by government.

2. All peaceful, voluntary economic and social associations are permitted; consent is the basis of the social and economic order.

3. Justly acquired property is privately owned by individuals and voluntary groups, and this ownership cannot be arbitrarily voided by governments.

4. Government may not redistribute private wealth or grant special privileges to any individual or group.

5. Individuals are responsible for their own actions; government cannot and should not protect us from ourselves.

The following is the Introduction to Liberty Defined, Ron Paul's newest book, to be released on April 19, 2011. Via Campaign for Liberty

America's history and political ethos are all about liberty. The Declaration of Independence declares that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are unalienable rights, but notice how both life and the pursuit of happiness also depend on liberty as a fundamental bedrock of our country. We use the word almost as a cliche. But do we know what it means? Can we recognize it when we see it? More importantly, can we recognize the opposite of liberty when it is sold to us as a form of freedom?

Liberty means to exercise human rights in any manner a person chooses so long as it does not interfere with the exercise of the rights of others. This means, above all else, keeping government out of our lives. Only this path leads to the unleashing of human energies that build civilization, provide security, generate wealth, and protect the people from systematic rights violations. In this sense, only liberty can truly ward off tyranny, the great and eternal foe of mankind.

The definition of liberty I use is the same one that was accepted by Thomas Jefferson and his generation. It is the understanding derived from the great freedom tradition, for Jefferson himself took his understanding from John Locke (1632-1704). I use the term “liberal” without irony or contempt, for the liberal tradition in the true sense, dating from the late Middle Ages until the early part of the twentieth century, was devoted to freeing society from the shackles of the state. This is an agenda I embrace, and one that I believe all Americans should embrace.

My only real issue with Kucinich is that he has introduced legislation that would ban handguns. Don't know that he's changed his views on that or not...

Dennis Kucinich is a light weight socialist donno why people want him on the ticket.

I'm with you. Despite the media bias and the pop culture bias created by so called prominent members of our society like Al Gore, we still gain ground consistently. If the media was fair and balanced like they advertise on Fox we would no doubt win this election. One of the biggest problems I believe this country faces is Corporatism. I love playing Monopoly, have always, since I was a kid. But this real life Monopoly of everything under the sun, especially our so called, "free press" has got to go. If it wasn't for Corporate media bias, it would be impossible for legislation like NDAA to be passed. The founders of this country were wise in making the 1st amendment, the very first proceeding all others, our right to free speech and a free press. Love how they backed it up with the second. They knew, as we are learning now, that when the fist is compromised, it's time to look to the second. Luckily for us, we have the internet and alternative media -- or should I say, lucky for them ;)

Ideally, a Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich GOP or independent ticket would be a perfect union in my opinion. Kucinich, in many ways holds the same values and principles that RP does. They may not agree on all issues but the issues that are of the utmost importance in our country today, like the economy, foreign policy (stopping the needless wars), civil liberties.... they both see eye to eye on. This union could possibly bring the left and right together finally, shatter the false left/right paradigm and shift the conscience of a country to unite as "We the People" and truly find a common ground to change the course of history in the US. We could possibly destroy the NWO if we were truly united. Of course, I may be dreaming but what the hell.... dreaming is still free. I guess only time will tell....

Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich GOP ticket?

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (Ohio). (Melina Mara - THE WASHINGTON POST)
As a progressive, a Ron Paul/Dennis Kucinich presidential ticket would stoke my fires. It might also attract Republicans who long for the party’s non-interventionist, fiscally conservative roots.

This week, Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) said U.S. Rep. Ron Paul’s (R-Texas) “views on foreign policy are more in line with liberal anti-war Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) than with the Republican Party.”

It was meant as a diss. But Santorum just may have won Paul more converts. Why not put the two peace-loving, civil-liberty-favoring, avant garde congressmen together on a ballot?

Merging polar opposite sides of the political spectrum could be one of the most politically pure, bipartisan ideological unions yet. Through that union, political dualities would ideologically balance each other out, appealing to divergent ends of the political spectrum.

If elected, Paul has said he would consider Kucinich for his cabinet.

On New Year’s Eve, President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act, despite “serious reservations.” The act makes it legal to indefinitely hold Americans in military detention. We may be fast approaching an Orwellion reality: “War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength.”

Paul and Kucinich both oppose the NDAA, which Paul calls a “slip towards tyranny.” Kucinich has been a consistent advocate for peace in the U.S. Congress, stated before the House of Representatives in recent weeks that the “bill authorizes permanent warfare anywhere in the world.”
