Gardening
Did you know that almost all seeds bough in every store in the USA and most of the world is owned by one corporation and they have been genetically modified to not produce any seeds?

This is so you have to buy more seeds the next year (So they say)
Not only are hybrid GM seeds sterile and lack nutrition, but the real reason is so you cannot feed you family or yourself in a time of crisis.

Self reliance calls for you to buy your seeds from a company that produces heritage seeds that have not been touched to alter them and will grow and produce seed's after the plant has matured.

IMPORTANT:
These are all-natural seeds, original strains of garden food non-hybrid, not genetically modified.
Most of these seeds date back 150 years. Heirloom offspring seeds can be saved and grown later. Important when people are starving!

Your welcome Lauren. My wife also buys pasta when it's on sale and every time we go to the Amish market. We store it in quart and 1/2 gallon canning jars and use Food saver attachment to suck out the air and seal it. I'm not sure how long it will last but so far we've eaten 2 year old stuff that was completely fresh. Oh yea, we also freeze our butter, also Amish butter. People kind of freak out when we buy 4 or 5 2lb rolls of butter at a time but we just make 1 trip a month, and that is usually for the Cheese. We seal it too but I don't think she freezes it.

I forget the specifics of the temps in the seed vaults but I remember they are a lot colder than my deep freezer can go. On our flour and cornmeal we put in the deep freezer for a minimum of 2 weeks then transfer it into a Mylar bag with Oxygen Absorbers toss in, I think dry ice does the same. Then those bags go into a 5 gallon bucket which has a screw on to and a rubber seal. I usually do them in smaller bags so we can use at will without worrying. Same with rice except for the freezing part. I think long grain bleached is suppose to keep longer, but check that one though, I could be wrong. Sugar we just toss in sometimes.

Freezing does not kill seeds if they are native to the Tropics and above;  it preserves them.  I have no problem starting seeds I've kept in the freezer for 25 years.

I keep my seeds in the deep freezer. That is especially important because if there are any diseases or pests it kills them.  At least for 2 weeks. We also do at least 2 weeks for flour, cornmeal, etc before storing it in Mylar bags with Oxygen Absorbers.

As to storing dried, nonhybrid seeds, you can get low priced desiccants to remove moisture here:

rareseeds.com their prices are reasonable, all heirlooms non-gmo, and most of all everything I grew this year from them is doing well. I have a purple russian tomato plant that set 80+ tomatoes at once, about 3 foot.

While Y'all are Blogging about gardening ,My tomato plants already have fruit on them .Actually i got fruit all winter from a very determined,"indetermanate" Tomato plant. It didnt look like she was gonna make it , but now has a few new ones starting. Also at the moment I am germinating some Okinawan/Chinese "bitter melon" seeds. If you are not familiar with this superfood,I suggest you look into it.The health benefits are too long to list.

The bitter melon plant (momordica charantia) has a long history of use in Eastern cultures, and its virtues have become more popular worldwide in recent decades. Also known as bitter gourd or balsam pear, this vegetable was originally native to Asia and today grows wild or is cultivated in tropical regions around the globe. It is similar in appearance to a cucumber with a bumpy skin, has a bitter taste as the name indicates, and most of its medicinal value is concentrated in the extract of the unripe fruit, interestingly enough. In a Chinese medical book from the 16th century, bitter melon is described as “bitter in taste, non-toxic, expelling evil heat, relieving fatigue, and illuminating.” Supplemental forms of bitter melon capitalize on its qualities that have been known in traditional medicine for many years.
