Anyone gardening this year.?
I am planting cover crops radishes. This will control the weeds as well as replace nutrients and keep the top soil in place. With this method we no longer have to till, looking forward to spring.
Here at Nierika, we are hosting mature and responsible volunteers with experience in organic agriculture, permaculture, education and teaching, media-production, natural building, food preservation, medicinal herbs, carpentry, and alternative medicine.
Garlic is finally starting to bust through, got a little worried about it. This year we try something different, grains. I'll cut back on the green beans and try some of the Ancient Grains. Based on what they prefer in soil, sun, shade, water, I'll plant them in one of the 3 garden areas. Not a lot to start with while I learn them.
These are Peanut Beans, like the ones sold as Old Joe Clark beans. A small green bean with a big flavor. If SHTF though, go with rattlesnake beans, which grow shade, sun, wet, or dry.
Different types of heirloom tomatoes. They're planted close together to shade each other from the heat, small coverage of grass for the evaporation of the water. Old package of Epson Salts, helps with bottom rot.
Thanks, we're just getting started into the year with canning. Crossing our fingers on the sauerkraut. We do ours organic and except for the Broccoli, no GM foods either. generally just grow enough for our family and extended one, then we give away whatever is left. The neighbor next door to us has a farm stand in White Pine I think, maybe Dandridge.
Live traps on either.
