German doctors remove 28-kg tumour from woman

AFP - Doctors in Germany said Friday they had removed a tumour weighing 28 kilogrammes (62 pounds) from a 60-year-old woman who had previously been diagnosed as obese.

A spokesman from the university clinic in the eastern city of Dresden said the woman, Irmtraud Eichler, had made a full recovery after the seven-hour operation and was now able to walk again with crutches.

The so-called "borderline" tumour, measuring 60 centimetres (24 inches) by 50 centimetres, attached itself to an ovary and Eichler began to put on weight at an alarming rate.

Her doctor put the weight gain down to a combination of diabetes and a lack of activity and prescribed a course of anti-obesity medicine.

He wasn’t so enthusiastic about all of the bids he was offered. Hartsburg, whose fresh ink is only three days old, said that he actually rejected the highest bid because it was “lewd.” His only requirement for bidding on the ‘ad space’ was that it could not be racist or offensive.

Hartsburg says that the whole thing was done as a gag but....REST OF IT

NEW SEWICKLEY TWP. — A 9-year-old girl was accidentally shot in the shoulder Saturday night by a family member who thought she was an animal outside a New Sewickley Township home, police said.

New Sewickley Police Chief Ronald Leindecker said the girl, whom he would not identify, was over a hillside around 8:30 p.m. during a Halloween party at 376 Brewer Road.

Leindecker said an unidentified male relative mistook the girl, who was wearing a black costume and a black hat with white tassel, for a skunk and shot her in the shoulder with a shotgun.

The girl was alert and talking when she was flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Leindecker said. A report on her condition was not available. Leindecker said he was not sure if charges will be filed. He added that the man had not been drinking.

Officers on Saturday night were still investigating and collecting statements, and they will turn over the case to the Beaver County district attorney’s office, Leindecker said.

Cat goes to vet for flea bath but gets euthanized

GARDNER, Mass. (AP) -- A Massachusetts woman says her cat went to the veterinarian for a flea bath and was mistakenly euthanized instead.

Colleen Conlon of Gardner is grieving the loss of the cat, 8-year-old Lady, which she attributes to "negligence" by the vet.

Her son took Lady to the Broadway Animal Hospital last week and unknowingly authorized the cat to be put to sleep after he says he was handed the wrong forms.

He says he learned of the mix-up when he returned with a second cat and the vet asked him if he wanted to keep the bodies......
