In the late 1970’s a sudden shift in the popular culture’s preference for illicit drugs was noted by up and coming recording artist Brain Protheroe. The demand for heroin and psychedelics had now transitioned into a class of tranquilizers and sleeping narcotics known by such terms as “Reds”, “Downers”, “Black Nightshade” and “Belladonna”. A cheap and powerful class of drugs easily prescribed or sold on the black-market. With it came a flurry of new drug related deaths and overdoses. Noted musicians such as Rolling Stone member Brian Jones had a well-known addiction to this class of drugs resulting in his controversial death.
A gifted talent makes note of a deadly craze
Guitarist, vocalist, and writer Brian Protheroe makes use of ironic and engaging lyrics to describe the drug and its effects upon the users. If anything rock music has been not only a creative musical medium, but also a form of social commentary that has documented the gradual slide of our society downward thanks to drug abuse, and some musical support for it as an acceptable phenomenon, while the young fall victim to the dangerous lifestyles that become fashionable.

Keisha Ruan, what's your problem? Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed? Is it that times of the month? Did your rice cooker break down? Brian Prothroe wrote an excellent song, well composed, lyrically clever, instrumentally sound about the growing Barbituate epidemic at the time. Jeez adjust your attitude! I read "Behold a Pale Horse" long before 9-11 I even listened to some of his underground radio shows.
