Ohio Senate Bill 5, designed to eliminate most collective bargaining for state workers, has passed a committee vote

COLUMBUS -- Senate Bill 5, designed to eliminate most collective bargaining for state workers, has passed a committee vote in Columbus. The bill passed 7-5, with one Republican joining four Democrats in opposing the measure.

Before the vote, Cincinnati Sen. Bill Seitz, a Republican who opposed the current form of the bill, was removed from the committee and replaced by Sen. Cliff Hite.
The move is legal because committee members serve at the pleasure of the Ohio Senate president, who is a Republican.

SB5 will go to the full Senate at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Yesterday there was a roar outside of the statehouse - and that roar was you. But, our work continues today. We need to keep the pressure on our State Senators to oppose Senate Bill 5.
Our State Senators need to know the impact that Senate Bill 5 will have on middle class workers and communities across Ohio.

--- Join us for a vigil this evening from 4 pm to 6:30 pm.

Event Details

WHEN: March 2nd, from 4 pm to 6:30 pm (join us after work)

Yep, police and firemen were left out of the stripping of bargaining power here but I do know that many police officers from Sheboygan went down to the capital to stand with all the union workers protesting in Madison. The police are on the peoples side in this fight here in WI which is a wonderful thing I might add.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Thousands of union supporters descended on the Ohio Statehouse on Tuesday to protest a proposal that would dramatically curtail bargaining powers of government workers, as the state becomes the latest flash point in the fight over union rights.
This Story

Like their counterparts in Wisconsin, protesters here accused lawmakers and Gov. John Kasich (R) of trying to use a budget crisis to destroy public-sector unions. Government workers did not cause the crisis and should not bear the brunt of it, protesters said.

But unlike in the standoff in Wisconsin, Democrats don't have the numbers to walk out and delay a vote. Supporters said that a measure, which would go further than the one in Wisconsin by also affecting police officers and firefighters, could emerge from the state Senate on Wednesday.

"It's great to see so many people willing to come out and get heard," Senate President Tom Niehaus said during a Statehouse interview marked by the sound of chanting protesters outside. "But it doesn't affect our resolve." more http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/03/01/AR2...
