An inventory of potentially deadly pathogens at Fort Detrick's infectious disease laboratory found more than 9,000 vials that had not been accounted for, Army officials said yesterday, raising concerns that officials wouldn't know whether dangerous toxins were missing.

After four months of searching about 335 freezers and refrigerators at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Frederick, investigators found 9,220 samples that hadn't been included in a database of about 66,000 items listed as of February, said Col. Mark Kortepeter, the institute's deputy commander.

Kids may get field tested with swine flu shots first as schools tur...

Schoolchildren could be first in line for swine flu vaccine this fall - and schools are being put on notice that they might even be turned into shot clinics.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Tuesday she is urging school superintendents around the country to spend the summer preparing for that possibility, if the government goes ahead with mass vaccinations.

"If you think about vaccinating kids, schools are the logical place," Sebelius told The Associated Press.

No decision has been made yet on whether and how to vaccinate millions of Americans against the new flu strain that the World Health Organization last week formally dubbed a pandemic, meaning it now is circulating the globe unchecked. But the U.S. is pouring money into development of a vaccine in anticipation of giving at least some people the shots.

While swine flu doesn't yet seem any more lethal than the regular flu that each winter kills 36,000 people in the U.S. alone, scientists fear it may morph into a more dangerous type. Even in its current form, the WHO says about half of the more than 160 people worldwide killed by swine flu so far were previously young and healthy.

If that trend continues, "the target may be school-age children as a first priority" for vaccination, Sebelius said Tuesday. "That's being watched carefully."

Schools do occasionally team up with local health officials for special flu vaccination clinics but it's not common. More than 140 schools around the country scheduled flu vaccination days last fall, some providing free vaccine. Some vaccinated only students bearing parent consent forms; others opened their doors to entire families.

More immediately, Sebelius faces the looming question of whether to push forward with swine flu vaccinations this fall, on top of the regular winter flu vaccine that will be distributed as usual. A key challenge would be making people understand who needs which, or both, vaccines, decisions that will be made in part based on how swine flu behaves in the Southern Hemisphere this summer, where flu season is just beginning.

Sebelius soon will call together the nation's governors to be sure "these months between now and the fall aren't used as vacation months" but in getting ready.

"We can always sort of back off" if the new flu fades away, she said, "but we can't wait til October hits and say, 'Oh my heavens, what are we going to do?'"

Companies are on track to provide pilot doses for testing later this summer, Sebelius said. Those government-led studies will check if the vaccine seems to work, if one dose or two will be needed, and most important if it's safe. The last mass vaccination against a different swine flu, in the U.S. in 1976, was marred by reports of a paralyzing side effect - for a feared outbreak that never happened.

So the Food and Drug Administration will closely track vaccine safety, Sebelius said.

The secretary said: "The worst of all worlds is to have the vaccine cause more damage than the flu potential."

New strain of H1N1 virus found

Brazilian scientists have identified a new strain of the H1N1 virus after examining samples from a patient in Sao Paulo, a research institute says.

The variant has been called A/Sao Paulo/1454/H1N1 by the Adolfo Lutz Bacteriological Institute, which compared it with samples of the A(H1N1) swine flu from California.

Baxter Advances to Full-Scale Production of A/H1N1 Vaccine

Baxter International Inc. (NYSE: BAX) announced today that it has completed testing and evaluation of the A/H1N1 influenza virus and is now in full-scale production of a commercial A/H1N1 vaccine using its Vero cell culture technology. Baxter received an A/H1N1 strain from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center] in early May and is diligently working to deliver a pandemic vaccine for use as early as July.

Baxter is, of course, the same company that sent out a vaccine test kit with live bird flu virus in it!

And the last time there was a mass vaccination program for swine flu back in 1976, the vaccine killed 50 times as many people as the flu did, and left many more with permanent neurological damage.

So you will understand if I behave rudely to anyone pointing a needle at me.

What they are not telling the people in the mass media, is as of today, that they have about 13,217 cases in the USA and only 27 deaths (4 of which we know were sick to begin with). That is the percentage of death toll is .02 percent. that is 2/10's of a percent! I wonder if folks will panic or whether they will use their calculators to do the math. But then, how many people remember how to figure percentage or even will bother "doing the math"?

Very mild flu but you see, they are formulating 3 injections which they want to sell us in the Fall which will be a hard sell unless they start brainwashing us now. ** sigh ** And if I sound annoyed, I am. I am tired of TV's and big Pharma's and the government's attempt to brainwash us to make an indecent profit... and problem is what they are selling us, may be WELL worse then the so called "danger"!

The last vaccine against the swine flu "pandemic" (which never hit) caused several deaths and disability from "French Polio". hmmmm

I took a flu shot once when I was pregnant. I figured I did not want to get the flu when I was carrying our son. I got the flu anyway that year, because later I found out they only cover 5 or 6 viruses in a flu shot and there are some 22 flu viruses circulating and typically the vaccine does not cover the prevalent flu except by my calculations about once every 10 years or so and for that, I'll just get the flu thank you... because the "covered" people don't get the flu they manage to "cover" once in every 10 years maybe, but they get a bunch of other flues anyway and colds etc.

I decided the flu shot was not worth it. I found out later, it has A LOT of that preservative in it which is uncomfortably close to mercury (I think it's called "timerisol" or something like that) and that a couple of studies have shown higher incidence of neurological disease and alzheimers or dementia in those who regularly take the flu vaccine.

And this Fall, they want to sell us THREE SHOTS. hmmm..... do the math for the bucks the pharmaceuticals will make from that one. They are, as we speak, already formulating the three shots, by the way. And Obama commented that he is planning "an aggressive education" of the public to get us to buy 3 jabs... (according to the White House chief of staff who appeared on the "Today show")

No one noticed that the year they ran out of flu vaccine, was an extremely light year for flu and few got the flu despite NOT having the vaccine.

Finally they point out that what caused the death of so many in 1918 (which really was only 10 percent of the population which means that 90 percent of the population LIVED and did NOT die from the flu) was basically sepsis... which in that "pandemic show" which has been airing on TV, they explained in a complex manner which I'm sure no one really understood except it sounded scary.

People forget that back in 1918, they had no antibiotics, no indoor plumbing, no real idea of sanitation... aseptic sterilization was not common and people lived unhealthy, smoked, did not get a lot of vitamins or veggies (hello? People died routinely of beri beri and stuff like that back then also and today, beri beri is ONLY seen in 3rd world countries and gastric bypass patients).

Skeptics have pointed out that we've been through several pandemics since 1918 only since most flu deaths are caused by opportunistic bacteria and NOT the original virus (against which most of us have a good defense system), antibiotics have stopped a pandemic from killing even 10 percent as it did in 1918...

BTW, the MSNBC claim that the Hong Kong Flu killed 1 million people in the 1960's is REALLY questionable... I don't want to say "media lie" although the thought had occured to me. :)
