Gardening
Did you know that almost all seeds bough in every store in the USA and most of the world is owned by one corporation and they have been genetically modified to not produce any seeds?

This is so you have to buy more seeds the next year (So they say)
Not only are hybrid GM seeds sterile and lack nutrition, but the real reason is so you cannot feed you family or yourself in a time of crisis.

Self reliance calls for you to buy your seeds from a company that produces heritage seeds that have not been touched to alter them and will grow and produce seed's after the plant has matured.

IMPORTANT:
These are all-natural seeds, original strains of garden food non-hybrid, not genetically modified.
Most of these seeds date back 150 years. Heirloom offspring seeds can be saved and grown later. Important when people are starving!

Beans sealed in a canning jar with Foodsaver attachment

Beans pressure cooked and sealed by pressure.

Buckets with Gamma Lids using Mylar bags for flour, rice, salt, etc.

I usually get stuff from here. I use the Mylar bags, O2 Absorbers and the Gamma Lids. Rather than using the big bags though I pack in smaller bags then place in a 5 gallon bucket with one of these lids. Some though are packed in a bag that takes up the whole bucket. Not my smartest move. Salt I leave in the box it comes in and place in the bucket. We use Celtic Sea Salt but regular salt just for in case of emergency.

For beans, pastas, etc, we use this method. I would shop around though for a better price. Instead of their plastic canisters we use  Mason Jars with the lids (lids can be reused.) Let me see if I can get a pick for ya.

Where does one purchase oxygen absorbers?  My husband thinks I am silly trying to store food so I havent put beans or rice into any container that is air tight.  Thanks

Hydro on a small scale. It's not that expensive if the streams have a decent flow. We have creeks in front and back of us and if push ever came to shove then making a small one for the house wouldn't be that bad. An alternator, some paddles for turning and a little electronics with a few transformers. It would fit comfortable in a small space.  Of course a car generator and a converter would work too.

Hi Frank. It sounds like you have it going on. Watch what you plant there though so that you don't contaminate what plants you have there naturally. When we plant here there are a lot of things I'd love to plant but I have to stick with our growing season, soil, and altitude. Here water can be a problem too. Our soil type can and does change quickly. Where I want to put the corn is completely different soil than where my gardens are, and they are different too. When I rotate crops I watch which ones I put in each soil.

As for the cows, I have a problem killing what I get attached too but I have no problem having someone else doing it. Might be something to think about there. If I had to I could but the ones that grow old enough to use as breeders are too tough to eat, and some I let live their life out here.Something though you might consider is getting someone who don't mind killing them. You get use to it though. Killing for fun is a sin but killing and using isn't, or so goes the Cherokee beliefs.

I've considered getting a Jersey or Guernsey for milking but I grew up on a dairy when I was young and I really don't want to milk everyday 2 days a week. If push comes to shove here I also use to have a large hatchery years ago and kept most my incubators and a few brooders, maybe turn out about 1,000 per week. Nothing big but still maybe enough. My wife would kill me though, lol. Good luck on the settlement, it sounds great. With the water flowing, have you considered using hydro equipment?

I love dogs too. We have 2 baby Great Pyrenees now, plus the parents and a mutt that stays inside.

Bad idea to store seeds in sealed cans.  They're living things and need air.

I usually get mine from local first if I can. Then Baker Creek on some. Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, plus I save mine when I can. Some of us swap out around here. I grow what we like to eat. This year I'm toying around with (provided the cancer is gone) about 1-2 acres of corn in addition to my garden. That will be for feed the livestock instead of buying it. Some can also go to some of the older people who can't afford to buy corn it eat.
