We’ve had periods of peace at different times in different places that lasted, as long as they lasted, until things dissolved…

One way I’ve come to visualize the Occupation is to imagine the indigenous Onondaga Nation in Onondaga County (NY), a Nation that white settlers long ago reduced to a fraction of its former territory. But to make the situations more comparable, suppose a 25-foot wall separated the Onondagas from the surrounding white-controlled county. Imagine that the Onondagas risked being shot from sniper…

Two Russian nuclear attack submarines have been patrolling off the eastern coast of the United States in a rare move that has alarmed the Pentagon.
One of the two submarines has remained in international waters just 200 miles (320 kilometers) off the coast of New York City, while the second sub left and moved south to make a port call in Cuba, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.
The US government and the military have so far refused to comment on the…

A juxtaposition of several simultaneous events this week indicates just how difficult it is going to be to achieve any meaningful progress in Arab-Israeli peace talks, when the heart of the conflict is land that Israelis and Palestinians both claim as their ancestral patrimony. The four events are the American drive to secure confidence-building measures from the Arabs in return for Israel’s freezing of its…

As an ex-Brit, I’m well aware of the authorities’ love of surveillance and snooping, but even I, a pessimistic cynic, am amazed by the governments latest plan: to install Orwell’s telescreens in 20,000 homes.
£400 million ($668 million) will be spent on installing and monitoring CCTV cameras in the homes of…

James Grimmelman sez:
"The Associated Press -- which thinks you owe it a license fee if you quote more than four words from one of its articles -- doesn't even care if the words actually came from its article. They'll charge you anyway, even if you're quoting from the public domain.
I picked a random AP article and went to their "reuse options" site. Then, when they…

Ohio Election Fraud received this statement from attorney Cliff Arnebeck:
You recently published on your web site a press release from Paddy Shaffer containing various assertions against counsel for the plaintiffs in the King Lincoln case. Paddy's group apparently felt this might be helpful to their effort to persuade the US District Court to change its decision denying their motion to intervene in our case.…

Exercise to simulate flu pandemic
By Mike Wynn
August 3, 2009
It will start with a few scattered cases. But as people shake hands or cough without covering their mouths, it could spread to thousands of victims within a matter of days.
Businesses may have to close, Clark Regional Medical Center could become overrun, and grocery stores might run short on supplies.
That’s the scenario public…

The resignation of Google CEO Eric Schmidt from Apple’s board should come as no surprise to anyone with an inkling of what corporate governance means.
But then Silicon Valley’s idea of corporate boards has long consisted of cozy, interlocking directorships which would be considered collusion in most other industries.
Google’s CEO is not leaving Apple’s board voluntarily. He is only stepping down in response to the increased government…

According to Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, your children should be the first target for mass swine flu vaccinations when school starts this fall.
This is a ridiculous assumption for many reasons, not to mention extremely high risk.
In Australia, where the winter season has begun, Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon is reassuring parents the swine flu is no more dangerous…
