About those "black box's", the evil entity we call government has more sinister plans in the grinder. A "per mile" fuel tax. Your car will be equipted with a memory card reader, which you'll need to insert in the slot to start your car. When you get gas, you give the card to the gas station guy who sends your info to the IRS, and also adds the milage tax from your miles driven, to your gas purchase. Of course the cost of the device ans maintenence will be added to the total price of the car. Won't buy a new car? They'll have after market ones but will cost more than factory installed.

Well, I feel qualified to comment.   I have been watching this field for 30 years from an intense background in math and science.   Obviously we are all already using nanotechnology in the form of semi-conductors, ie, nano-scale lithography.  Eric Drexler expected the biggest impact to come from nano-scale materials (like constructing new materials that cannot be achieved chemically)   This has only recently become a very exciting field with the neatest stuff disappearing into govt dark labs of course.  (If you're wondering what, just look at how many classified patents there are!)   We already have applications of nano in medicine, from rfid to drug-releasing synthetic structures.   The real worry all along however has been "self-replicating nano machines".   Altho they can design bacteria from scratch now, they are still a long way from competing with what nature has done.
