WTRH-AM - Smart Meter Alert - Gas Meters Being Installed Today.

I was sleeping and what happenned was someone from maintence barged into my apartment which was from a company to install a "gas meter". What is a gas meter? Never heard of it until it's being installed today. I will have pics available of the one installed in my thermostat area. These meters had a wire connected to it and a meter in front of the container. It's supposed to estimate on how much gas is being used and what will the bill be next time. So what's next?
