November 19, 2009 -- NEW YORK--American lives are worth a lot. So when Americans get killed, it's a big story. There are lots of editorials. Congressmen call for investigations. We want to find out what happened, why it happened, and how to make sure it never happens again.
The lives of foreigners, on the other hand, are pretty much worthless. Even when they die because Americans killed them, news accounts…

Sad to think someone would have to go to jail for not tipping because of bad service. They paid for the food. Theft, WTF. I can kind of understand if they just got up and left without paying, but after crappy service they still paid. I'm glad the ticket will not hold up in court. It really doesn't matter for the couple who has been humiliated. The bartender didn't even work it out, he is an ass. Don't go to restaurants that make the gratuity mandatory. I will not tip if the service is…

Haidar Eid, a professor of English, political commentator and resident of Gaza City, asks whether the president of the United States remembers anything from his long-ago meeting with the late Palestinian intellectual Edward Said.
Dear Mr. President:
You will probably not read this letter due to your busy schedule and the huge number of messages you receive from presidents, kings, princes, sheiks and prime ministers. Who is a…

Right-wing groups in Israel want to create a climate of fear among left-wing scholars at Israeli universities by emulating the "witch-hunt" tactics of the U.S. academic monitoring group Campus Watch, Israeli professors warn.
The watchdog groups IsraCampus and Israel Academia Monitor are believed to be stepping up their campaigns after the recent publication in a U.S. newspaper of an Israeli professor’s call to boycott Israel.
Both groups have…

In a perfect world we would give all our music away for free and survive on touring revenue, merchandising and licensing income. Alas this is not always possible. In order to eat we have to sell a few CD’s. The good news is that much of our catalog has been released under this creative commons license
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0 We have made many Antiqcool songs free to download for a reason, we want you to…

Google’s YouTube is making another pitch to media organizations, this time with a tool that makes it easy for news sites to solicit videos from their visitors.
YouTube Direct lets visitors to a news site upload YouTube videos right from that site; news orgs can then vet the clips, which appear both on their site and on YouTube. So far, Google says ABC News, the
Huff Post, NPR, Politico,…

Dear C4L Member,
A few weeks ago, we sent out an alert that Representative Mel Watt was attempting to water down H.R. 1207 in the House Financial Services Committee.
The latest reports we have received have informed us that a vote on the Watt amendment could come tomorrow!
There’s still time for us to stop this attack on Audit the Fed!…

Each and everyday I'm amazed by the sad amount of truth held within this statement.
I've totally shunned TV, I have no cable, no dish, I've deleted every mainstream news source from my iGoogle RSS reader and I am now weeding out what I once considered to be the best 25 economic blogs.
Let’s visit the many ways that we are…

HERE I was compelled to write an email to IBM in order to solicit a response. The document in question, which in fact is real, is at the bottom of this post.
It should be noted that although I am the founder and ex-publisher of Senior Magazine I neglected to include the ex in my emails with Doug. The emails appear in reverse with the most recent first and the first one…

Researchers have demonstrated a tiny chip based on silicon that could be used to diagnose dozens of diseases.
A tiny drop of blood is drawn through the chip, where disease markers are caught and show up under light.
The device uses the tendency of a fluid to travel through small channels under its own force, instead of using pumps.
The design is simpler, requires less blood be taken, and works more quickly than…

BEIJING -- President Barack Obama gave his sternest warning yet about the need to contain rising U.S. deficits, saying on Wednesday that if government debt were to pile up too much, it could lead to a double-dip recession.
With the U.S. unemployment rate at 10.2 percent, Obama told Fox News his administration…
