Stretching Your Budget with Barter
"In the past, goods were exchanged on a one-to-one basis with the intent that the value of the goods traded was of relatively equal value. Prior to the establishment of currencies, barter was the most accepted form of commerce. … While one-to-one bartering is still practised between individuals and businesses on an informal basis, organized barter exchanges have developed to conduct third party bartering. The barter exchange operates as a broker and bank and each participating member has an account which is debited when purchases are made, and credited when sales are made. With the removal of one-to-one bartering, concerns over unequal exchanges are reduced."
It is a good idea to stockpile goods that may have surprising value in crises situation.
"If things hit the fan, particularly in an economic collapse where the dollar is nearly worthless, a number of non-monetary goods will be more valuable than a fistful of dollar bills."

Greece bartering system popular in Volos

"A few months ago, an alternative currency was introduced in the Greek port city of Volos. It was a grass-roots initiative that has since grown into a network of more than 800 members, in a community struggling to afford items in euros during a deepening financial crisis."

Utah Legalizes Gold, Silver Coins As Currency

"Making gold and silver coins legal tender sends a strong signal to Congress and the Federal Reserve that their monetary policy is failing," said Ralph Danker, project director for economics at the Washington, D.C.-based American Principles in Action, which helped shape Utah's law. "The dollar should be backed by gold and silver, so we have hard money."

Comment: Gold and silver are good trade instruments because of their small size relative to value in a normal healthy society. However, in times of chaos a gun is a required tool for keeping your wealth, and for some a means of getting the wealth of the unarmed. Cooperation is a key to maintain the safety, land, clean food and water, and means of production of your team. Gold and silver fancy many because they shine, but are you sure they can be traded to food in the days of chaos? I would rather store something of practical value - things like; timber, fuels, metals sheets and wires, steel beams, food, water, maybe alcohol, guns, ammunition, textiles, tools, vehicles, you name it. After all, you cannot eat gold and silver, and their practical value is small relative to their current market value.
